BCBS BREAKS DOWN THE IMPORTANCE OF ADHESION TESTING!

July 2nd, 2025

By: BC Building Science

One of the many services that BC Building Science performs is the adhesion test because knowing up front how well something vital sticks, can make or break the performance, safety, and longevity of a product or structure.

Key Reasons to Perform Adhesion Tests:

  • Ensure Long-Term Performance

A coating or sealant that does not adhere properly can peel, crack, or delaminate which can lead to premature failure and subsequent costly repairs.

  • Verify Surface Preparation

Adhesion testing confirms whether the surface was properly cleaned, primed, or roughened for maximum bond strength.

  • Prevent Water or Air Leaks

In building envelopes or waterproofing systems, poor adhesion can allow moisture, air, or contaminants to enter which undermines the structure.  For example, if a waterproof membrane does not stick properly to concrete, water can seep behind it, leading to mold, corrosion, or structural damage.

  • Improve Safety

In critical applications, adhesion failure can be a safety hazard, so ensuring that all steps have been executed correctly from the start is essential.

  • Quality Control & Consistency

Regular testing helps manufacturers or installers catch inconsistencies before full-scale production or application.  Further, many industries including construction, require specific adhesion performance to pass inspections and meet industry standards and specifications.

Adhesion testing is just one of the tools that BCBS offers with our comprehensive field testing services. Contact us to learn more about how we can help!
