Alaska is a 27-storey concrete-framed mixed-use building, with 164 residential units. Located in Burnaby’s Brentwood neighbourhood, Alaska features 1–3-bedroom homes and multi-level lofts, many offering sensational views of both downtown Vancouver and the North Shore mountains. Steps away from Brentwood’s numerous dining and shopping options, this ultra-modern building, boasting light filled rooms and designer kitchens, is conveniently situated close to local transit plus commuter routes to Vancouver. BCBS was an integral part of the team during the new construction of this development. Our expertise contributed to the successful completion of this exciting project through providing an enhanced building science commissioning program. This approach first included establishing the basis of design for the building envelope as well as a commissioning plan. During the construction phase, we performed ongoing field reviews and provided field testing of key envelope and commissioning components as the testing agency. This approach first included establishing the basis of design for the building envelope and guiding the design for energy efficiency optimization through energy modelling. Envelope field testing included the necessary quality assurance field tests to ensure optimal functionality such as testing a sampling of windows and doors as well as conducting whole building airtightness testing to ensure compliance with energy efficiency targets.
