WHAT IS ENERGY BENCHMARKING?
Energy and Greenhouse Gas Reporting is the systematic tracking of how much energy a building consumes and how much carbon pollution it produces. Annual reporting helps build a database of building energy use, allowing performance to be benchmarked against similar buildings. In Vancouver, this reporting supports the City’s Climate Emergency Action Plan, which aims to reduce carbon emissions and transition buildings toward low carbon, energy efficient performance.
Why does this matter?
- Supports compliance with municipal and provincial regulations
- Helps building owners understand energy use
- Enables benchmarking against similar buildings
- Provides data to guide retrofits, electrification, and asset planning
- Contributes to citywide climate targets and transparency initiatives
Currently, the City of Vancouver requires commercial buildings over 50,000 sqft and multi-family buildings over 100,000 sqft to report their energy and greenhouse gas emissions data. Additionally, starting June 1, 2026, multi-family buildings over 50,000 sqft will also be required to report their data as well.
