BCBS IS ON THE HUNT FOR PESKY AIR LEAKS!

April 9th, 2025

By: BC Building Science

One of the many valuable services that BC Building Science offers its clients is mid-construction airtightness testing, which is performed while a building is still being built.  These tests help identify and fix air leakage issues at an early stage when it is both easier and less expensive to address them.

Why do a mid-construction airtightness test?

  • To provide the opportunity to seal leaks before finishes like drywall or cladding are added.
  • To ensure the final airtightness target (energy code compliance, etc.) is achievable.

When is it typically done?

  • After the airtight layer (membranes, tapes, sealants, etc.) is mostly installed.
  • Before drywall or interior finishes conceal problem areas.

What is involved?

  • A blower door test is conducted, similar to the final airtightness test.
  • Leaks are identified using highly specialized tools and technology.

Performing mid-construction airtightness testing can not only save you a lot of time, trouble, and money, it can also provide peace of mind during the building process!
