BUSINESS ANALYST, AI & AUTOMATION CO-OP STUDENT

What we are looking for:

BC Building Science is seeking a motivated UBC Sauder Co-op student interested in business analysis, AI, automation, and data-driven decision-making. The student will support a digital transformation project to improve how BCBS uses financial, proposal, and historical project information.

  • This project-based role suits a student who enjoys analyzing processes and data and building practical tools. The successful candidate will help design and test solutions that make proposal development and pricing more efficient.

What we expect from you:

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate co-op program, ideally in Business Technology Management, Business Analytics, Finance, Operations, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, process-mapping, and requirements-gathering skills.
  • Advanced Excel and data organization, cleaning, analysis, and validation skills.
  • Interest in AI, automation, analytics, and digital transformation; experience with or willingness to learn Copilot, Power Automate, Power BI, SharePoint, SQL, Python, VBA, or similar tools.
  • Clear communication, initiative, attention to detail, discretion, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

What you are going to do:

  • Document proposal-development and pricing processes, requirements, risks, and improvement opportunities.
  • Organize and analyze historical proposal, project, and financial data for comparison and reuse.
  • Build and test dashboards, workflows, and AI-assisted tools that identify comparable projects and support proposal pricing.
  • Validate outputs, document assumptions and controls, and refine solutions with finance, proposal, and technical teams.
  • Create process maps, data dictionaries, user instructions, and a final presentation with recommendations and next steps.

Potential project deliverables:

  • A structured, searchable proposal and pricing dataset with documented data-quality issues and controls.
  • A requirements document, process map, and proof-of-concept pricing or comparable-project tool.
  • Dashboards or automated reports, user instructions, and a roadmap for implementation.

What you will learn:

  • How AI, automation, analytics, and historical financial information support consulting operations and proposal pricing.
  • How to move from requirements and raw data to a tested proof of concept.
  • How to communicate recommendations while addressing data quality, confidentiality, governance, adoption, and human oversight.

Working expectations:

  • Part-time or temporary co-op arrangement, based on student availability and project needs, in a professional office environment with potential hybrid work.
  • Collaboration with BCBS leadership and team members, with adherence to confidentiality, privacy, security, and document-management requirements.

Why work with us:

BC Building Science is a professional engineering firm delivering building-envelope and energy-efficient design solutions for residential and commercial clients in British Columbia, Washington, and California.

What to expect from us:

  • A meaningful project with potential organization-wide impact and direct exposure to senior leaders and subject-matter experts.
  • A supportive, collaborative team and exposure to varied engineering consulting projects.
  • Practical skill development in business analysis, data analytics, AI, automation, and professional communication.
  • Competitive hourly compensation based on experience, qualifications, and the agreed work arrangement.
