BCBS OFFERS ITS TOP TIPS FOR PREVENTING A DRYER FIRE!

Dryer fires are far more common than people think, but the encouraging news is that they are highly preventable with just a few consistent habits.  Most fires are caused by lint buildup, poor airflow, or electrical issues.  A dryer that is only partially blocked is on the dangerous road to start a fire, but it also will cause your dryer to work less efficiently by taking far longer to dry items, leading to frustration and higher electricity bills.

Use this Dryer Fire Prevention Checklist to keep your dryer operating safely and efficiently:

After Every Load

  • Clean lint filter thoroughly.
  • Check for leftover lint around lint filter opening and dryer door seal.
  • Make sure the dryer is not overloaded during use.
  • Never run the dryer while sleeping or not at home.

Weekly

  • Wipe down lint screen with warm soapy water to remove residue left by fabric softener and dryer sheets.
  • Check the floor surrounding the dryer for lint buildup or clutter that may have accumulated.
  • Inspect dryer drum for debris such as tissues, buttons, etc.
  • Take note of unusual noises or evidence of overheating, such as a burning smell or the dryer being excessively hot to touch.

Every 3–6 Months

  • Check vent hose for kinks or blockages.
  • Vacuum behind and under the dryer.
  • Ensure outdoor vent flaps open freely.

Every 12 Months

  • Professional dryer vent and duct system cleaning is highly advised as this procedure can access points that manual cleaning cannot. If you live in a condominium, check with your Strata for when the next professional cleaning is scheduled.

Safety Extras

  • Have a smoke detector installed nearby.
  • Make sure a fire extinguisher is accessible.
  • Keep the dryer surface free of debris.

If any warning signs appear, stop using the dryer immediately and inspect or call a professional before resuming use.  Easy, preventative measures can save both property and lives!
