Luckily, preventing a devastating dryer fire is a straightforward and easy undertaking.  Regular dryer maintenance (beyond just cleaning the lint trap) and safe usage are your keys to success.

  1. Clean the Lint Trap Regularly
  • Clean the lint filter before or after every load.
  • Occasionally wash the filter with soap and water to remove residue caused by fabric softener and dryer sheets.

  1. Check and Clean the Vent System
  • The vent hose and exhaust vent should be inspected for lint buildup at least once a year. If you live in a condominium, be sure that this service is on your Strata’s annual checklist.
  • If you are able to access this area yourself, use a vacuum or a vent-cleaning brush to remove any trapped lint, and ensure the vent exiting outside is not blocked by debris. Be sure to have the dryer and vent system inspected regularly by a professional as well, particularly if you notice clothes taking longer to dry, a burning smell, or excessive heat.

  1. Avoid Overloading the Dryer
  • Overloading can cause the dryer to overheat and trap lint in hard-to-reach places.

  1. Use the Correct Dryer Settings
  • Avoid using high heat unnecessarily as excessive heat increases the risk of fire.

  1. Never Leave the Dryer Unattended
  • Do not run the dryer when you away from home, outside in the garden, or while asleep. Things can get out of control very quickly once a fire starts and your ability to spot a problem immediately is crucial.

  1. Keep the Area Around the Dryer Clutter Free
  • Avoid storing flammable materials such as aerosol cans, cleaners, or clothes near the dryer.

By following these guidelines, you will extend the life of your dryer, cut back on excess energy consumption which will translate to saved dollars, and, most importantly, keep you and your family safe!
