OLD MEETS NEW AND ARE TREATED TO INNOVATIVE AIRTIGHTNESS TESTING AT THE SCHOU EDUCATION CENTRE!
Located in Burnaby, The Schou Education Centre is a 3-storey concrete / steel-framed (new portion) and wood-framed (heritage portion) building which has been artfully renovated, joining the two sides via walkways.
To comply with the city’s energy requirements, BC Building Science conducted airtightness testing at the site. This building was a unique challenge from an airtightness perspective due to the combination of the existing Schou heritage structure being preserved and a new addition being added during the construction stage. BCBS completed a mid-construction airtightness test to evaluate the heritage building and identify any gaps or deficiencies in the building’s air barrier. Once construction was complete, we tested the building as a whole to determine the overall airtightness of the building at the occupancy stage.
The new Schou Education Centre is a brilliant example of building renovation that lovingly preserves the original structure’s charm, while gracefully constructing and weaving in new components to produce a stunning final product.
