Dirt, dust, and debris layering onto your windows and screens, particularly in cities, can cause your inside world to dim after only one season of inclement weather.  Proper window care is essential for maintaining the appearance, functionality, and longevity of your windows.  Here are some key aspects to consider for keeping your windows in tip-top form.

Cleaning the Glass:

  • Frequency – Clean windows regularly, at least once every 2-3 months, depending on weather and other considerations such as wildfires and pollution levels.

  • Tools – Use a microfiber cloth, squeegee, or a soft sponge to avoid scratching the glass.

  • Cleaning Solution – A simple mixture of water and vinegar (or a glass cleaner) works well and is much gentler than abrasive cleaners with grit which may cause scratches.

  • Method – Clean the glass on a cool, cloudy day to prevent streaks caused by fast drying. Wipe from top to bottom using a circular motion.

Cleaning Window Frames:

  • Vinyl Frames – Wipe down with mild soap and water.

  • Wood Frames – Dust regularly and treat with a wood cleaner. For painted or stained wood, check for cracks or peeling paint.

  • Aluminum Frames – Use a non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth. Aluminum can corrode, so allowing them to dry properly after cleaning is important.

Checking Seals and Caulking:

  • Routine Check-up – Examine window seals, caulking, and weather-stripping annually to prevent drafts, leaks, or condensation. If a seal is damaged or worn out, replace it to maintain optimum energy efficiency.

Window Screens:

  • Cleaning – Remove and wash screens with soapy water, and then rinse and air dry before reinstalling.

  • Repairing – Inspect for any holes or tears in the fabric. Any small problems may be repaired with a screen patch kit.

Energy Efficiency:

  • Consider installing energy-efficient windows or applying a specialized film directly onto your windows that blocks UV rays and reduces heat transfer. Both of these methods will help you save on energy costs.

Performed regularly, these simple measures will not only enhance the appearance of your windows, but they will enable them to function efficiently for years plus save you money!
