BCBS WANTS TO HELP YOU READY YOUR DECK FOR THE SEASON!
Spring has sprung and that means it’s time to swing the doors open and get out into the sunshine. After a long hibernation, your deck may look a little… tired. But no need to worry as you can get it ready for your first spring evening under the stars in no time! BC Building Science offers you these tips for both a smart spring clean and basic maintenance to create a deck you’re eager to spend time on.
- Cleaning
- Sweep all debris (leaves, dirt, etc.) from your deck surface regularly.
- Wash the deck with a mild detergent or a specialized deck cleaner to remove dirt, mildew stains, and organic growth such as moss.
- If you choose to use a power washer, do so cautiously as too much pressure can damage the deck surface.
- Inspect for Damage
- Check for loose boards, nails, or screws.
- Look for rot or mold, especially around posts and steps.
- Inspect railings and stairs for stability.
- Sand down any rough spots to prevent splinters.
- Maintenance
- If your deck is wooden, consider staining or sealing it every 1-3 years to protect it from moisture and sun damage.
- At the end of the season, remove all furniture and planters to prevent excessive moisture from forming.
- Shovel any snow from the deck’s surface with a plastic shovel to avoid gouging the surface.
- Be sure to always make sure that your deck’s drain is free of debris to prevent water pooling.
Once you have your deck cleaned, refreshed, and dry, the fun begins with the furniture and accessories arrangement – a task that allows you to showcase your deck’s unique personality!
